Guns are for killing people and I don't need the practice

My blog states, "mostly bike related" and this post is will not be about cycling. I will do my best to keep your interest though.

Yesterday I was asked by a co-worker if I owned any guns. I said no. He went on a rant that I better go out and buy some because soon we will not be able to own a gun because of our current president.

I truly believe every law abiding American citizen should have the right to own a gun. I also truly believe I should have the right to not own one.

I grew up on a farm and I was a hunting and fishing nut. I now get my meat from a grocery story and hunting for food or hunting for sport just is not my thing. Why? I guess after 11 years in the military I feel guns are for killing people and not for sport or fun.

"Guns are for killing people and I do not need the practice!" What do you get out of that statement? Am I a pacifist? How about an arrogant x-jarhead? I was high shooter out of my battalion. I know how to shoot. What I am dribbling about is I have nothing to prove by owning a gun. I would not receive any joy out of owning one or shooting one. I will, however, take arms again if my country ever asks me to. If I ever decide to own a gun and a person asks me if I own one, my response will be, that is none of your business.

That's a great facial expression on your face on your banner!

I, like you, use to hunt quite a bit but haven't in quite some time. I do own a gun, a shotgun. I haven't fired it in years. I'm pretty sure I know where I have it stashed and am even more sure I have no ammo for it.

Something I tried and do like quite a bit is sporting clays - google it - that was lots 'o fun.

I hunted and fished for years too, but when my bird dog passed on, I just didn't have the heart for it anymore. I enjoyed shooting a 22 pistol on the NRA small bore qualification course because in order to shoot well I had to push most thinking aside and do nothing but concentrate on that moment. The process is the same whether it's archery or an air pistol. Still, putting holes in a paper target is pretty much a useless skill.

A few years ago I was renewing my health insurance at the place I worked before you good renew you had to take a survey one of the question was if you own a gun. I answer honestly yes I own a gun at that time. When the finding of the survey came back to me it said I was at a higher risk because I own a gun at that time, so much for being honest. My concern is a power hungry government running a single payer health plan looking anyway to cut cost will use information against you.

Well said. I'm a vet too. And choose not to own a gun. Have you noticed that most of the gun-nut, super patriotic types have NEVER SERVED THEIR COUNTRY? Makes me kinda sick acutally. They're American in word, not deed.

Anonymous,

Reminds me of a former co-worker who said he was a Marine also. He was a Navy corpsman. He was not a Marine just I was nothing but a truck mechanic serving only during peacetime. He had an assault on his record for sticking his gun in his neighbor's face BTW.
