Don't let them shut down the bike trail until 2010 with no alternate routes
Sioux Falls is going to close down the bike trail at the 41st area to the Great Plains Zoo area until 2010 with no alternate routes. This is not acceptable. We still have to chance to voice our opinions and concerns. The Snakebite will be speaking. I hope you all can dress in cycling garb and attend the meeting.
Please attend the meeting this Wednesday, 5-6:30 at the Oyate Community Center, 2421 W. 15th Street - next to Garfield Elementary.

I bike to work 3 days a week using the trail segment from the zoo to 41st starting as early in spring as daylight and ice-free roads allow. If this levee raising and work on the 41st street bridge do have to take place, might there be a way in the future to make it possible to avoid the busiest street and intersection in the state? Say, a bicycle/pedestrian bridge south of Skunk Creek connecting to an east-west passage allowing the cyclist, walker and wheelchair user a safer means of negotiating this dense and treacherous area. I take the sidewalks along 41st to Barnes and Noble, sometimes beyond, and find the walks chopped up with inlets/outlets to parking lots, abrupt changes in surface grades over storm sewers, poorly placed traffic light posts, and very badly located ramps for crossing at intersections. I ride very defensively and wear a safety vest, yet even on the walks I experience some close calls with motorists and much frustration. Actually riding on this street is for me unthinkable, as a bicycle commuting friend had a collision with a right-turning car in which neither he nor his bicycle emerged unharmed. (His bike was totalled and he's lucky to be with us still.) This part of Sioux Falls is not at all bicycle friendly and this is a shame. I do hope the city engineers consider some of this in their efforts to make improvements this year.
